This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Children learn early on not to run with scissors because they can get hurt, but in my classes, adult-sized scissors are a necessity. Sadly, we only have two pairs of adult scissors for my fourth and fifth grade classes. This leads to wasted instructional time and an unsafe learning environment.

I am the Art specialist in a K-5 Arts school.

We are located in one of the poorest rural areas of the state. Our families are plagued by poverty and high unemployment rates. I see about 971 students every week, from Kindergarten though grade five. All of the students receive free or reduced price lunch. The student population is 95% Hispanic, 3% African American, 1% Caucasian, and 1% Asian. About 70% of the students in my room are learning English as a second language.

My Project

Currently we only have 32 pairs of adult-sized scissors for an entire class of almost 50. My fourth and fifth grade students need adult-size scissors to use in art class. When we have projects, their hands or fingers are too big and do not fit in the kids-size scissors making it difficult to cut. Currently we only don't have enough pairs of adult scissors making it extremely difficult for a class of almost 50 to share. We are requesting 18 pairs of big scissors so all students to can have their own pair of scissors.

With these materials, my students will be able to have a more structured learning environment that they need to help them achieve their learning goals.

These new adult-size scissors will allow them to cut out projects without hurting their hands. It's horrible that everyone does not have what they need to be successful! Can you help us?
