My Students

"This song isn't very good." "Do we have to learn this?" "Why can't we ever sing cool stuff?" My students are wonderfully talented singers who come straight out of hip-hop households. They desire to sing and want to, but the music we have in our classroom is old and dated. It bores them.

My students come from a impoverished inner-city area.

Ninety percent of our school population receives free or reduced lunches. Many are children of single-parent homes who spend the majority of their day at school or daycare. We have children of college and vocational school students, children of military parents and children who live in the local home for children. Because of our location and our population, our school is a Title-1 school, but we don't let that limit us. We have goals and dreams for each child and our students succeed with high testing scores and great character. These students come to school with challenges that try to push them down constantly, but with the help of the teachers I work side-by-side with, we have shown them they can succeed. They are eager to learn and make a difference in life.

My Project

The students I work with daily come from what I like to call hip-hop homes. They listen to rap and tween pop. When they come to school, the most current music we have is either what I've purchased in the last two years or what is in our fifteen year old text books. Plank Road Publishing's MusicK8 magazine is a resource that I feel with greatly improve the quality of music my students will learn throughout the next year. It is a resource that will send a new issue every other month with new and captivating seasonal songs.

Many influential educators have spoken about the importance of quality music education.

With the MusicK8 Magazine as a resource in my classroom, I will be able to utilize more than just student voices in learning. It contains music for recorders, for BoomWhackers and more. I'm positive I can grasp every student with this resource.
