A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Our high school is located in a diverse community in the Salt Lake valley in Utah. We celebrate the diversity that we have at our school, with over 41% of the student body being minority enrollment. However, we have an overwhelming amount of needs at our school with over 50% of our students nonproficient in reading & math, and testing in the bottom 50% in state testing. Over 40% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch, which impacts our school budget significantly with funding extracurricular activities such as our yearbook publication class.
The students aim for the stars and want to make a meaningful contribution to the surrounding community.
The Yearbook Publication class gives students purpose, a personal connection to the school, and most importantly the opportunity to give each student a sense of belonging to the school community. For this reason, we are applying for this grant in hopes of purchasing the needed cameras and equipment to continue to create an exceptional and successful product that captures all of the year’s memories and lasting experiences that all of the students at our school will be proud of and cherish.
My Project
We are applying for the Salt Lake Board of Education - Donors Choose grant program to be able to purchase 1 new camera and supporting accessories in order to support and improve the Yearbook Publication class at our school. The class is designed to teach students journalistic, photography, graphic design, and publication skills that the students will implement to produce the school’s yearbook. We want to provide our students with the necessary tools to create an exceptional and successful product that captures all of the year’s memories and lasting experiences that all of the students at our school will be proud of and cherish.
Over the past years, the photography equipment that has been used to produce the yearbook has declined in performance, condition, and functionality, which has created a heavy burden on our school and the publication class to produce adequate and professional-looking photographs that truly capture and document the highlights and stories that are essential to every school's yearbook.
