This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We call our classroom the Robot Studio. We are engineers, mathematicians, researchers, readers, writers, and creative artists, who LOVE hands on learning. Our goal in the 2016-2017 school year is to ramp up our maker centers in order to refine our skills and--as always--have fun learning! My students are all emerging bilinguals with an insatiable appetite for learning and creative projects. Student-directed, project-based learning is ideal for emerging bilinguals because it affords them opportunities to communicate--A LOT--with their classmates as they work together to figure out what works or why something doesn't work.

We deeply value resources that empower us to build stuff!

My Project

We call our classroom the Robot Studio. Each year, a new cohort of emerging bilinguals pour into our shared classroom with an abundance of creative energy, nascent analytical abilities, and a pressing desire to build stuff. This tremendous amount of intellectual curiosity--when matched with adequate resources and spaces for learning--is what powers deep and authentic learning. The Robot Studio is developing a Maker Center for young artist-engineers. This learning center will be stocked with littleBits components and blueprints for student-directed project-based learning. Students will have the opportunity to spend time in the Maker center working on short-term and long-term projects. We will also open this center during monthly parent-engagement events during which parents and students come together to build stuff.
