Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Providing snacks in a bilingual classroom is more than just a kind gesture—it’s a critical support for student success. Many students in bilingual programs come from households where food insecurity is a real concern. Having access to healthy snacks during the school day ensures that students are not distracted by hunger and can remain focused and engaged in learning.

Nutrition is directly linked to cognitive performance.

When students are well-fed, they have better memory retention, higher energy levels, and a greater ability to process and produce language—skills that are essential in a bilingual setting. Learning a second language requires intense concentration, and even a small, nutritious snack can make a significant difference in a student’s ability to participate actively.

In addition, sharing snacks can foster a sense of community and inclusiveness. For students navigating two cultures and two languages, the classroom snack break becomes a comforting and communal time where they feel cared for and supported. It also offers an opportunity for teachers to introduce foods from different cultures, creating valuable moments of cross-cultural appreciation and connection.

Ultimately, snacks in a bilingual classroom support not only the physical well-being of students but also their academic growth, emotional security, and cultural identity. It’s a simple yet powerful way to show students they matter and that their success—both in school and beyond—is worth investing in.
