Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Working in an elementary school in the Bronx is rewarding because I get to help so many families in need. Our families are sending their children to school to be educated but also to be fed. Many are in temporary housing/shelter and don't have the resources for daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Giving my students snacks/food has become an act of love.

Providing my students with snacks communicates that their wellbeing is a priority, and it allows them to make the connection with the importance of school.

Having a fridge will allow me to store the many snacks I have already purchased for the students as well as store water, juice, and fruits. In my sessions, I have students who are not engaged and at times it's because they didn't have dinner the night before or breakfast in the morning.

I have students who come to school on time because they can count on a snack from the guidance counselor office. In addition, when celebrating student's birthday, I like to give them stickers and snacks, so they feel loved and appreciated.

Parents don't always have the resources to buy snacks for their children, so we do our best at PS 146 to meet those needs.

I work with students on their social emotional development and feeding them is a priority. The students don't always have the language to communicate their feelings but through arts and craft they are able to regulate their emotions and return back to the learning environment.

My goal is that my students feel loved, seen, and appreciated for their uniqueness and their personality.
