My Students

I am a high school math teacher in South Central Los Angeles. My school is a Title I school that is considered PHBAO (Predominantly Hispanic, Black, Asian, or other Non-Anglo). My students all qualify for free breakfast and lunch and come from primarily low-income families. Many of the students do not have access to the tools and technology needed for success in mathematics. With this lack of access, many students have to share calculators, iPads, laptops, etc. which slows down their learning drastically.

In the face of adversity, my students remain enthusiastic about learning.

All students remain diligent, patient, and persistent as we all adapt to learning while adjusting to the pandemic. Although we are back in the classroom, many students struggle with the tremendous impact of the pandemic. Many families are still struggling. This is very motivating for me as a teacher to provide as much support as I can to my students and their families.

My Project

Our entire school will be taking the PSAT/SAT. I have a senior homeroom, so my students will be taking the official SAT. The entire testing process takes over 4 hours to complete and students do not have any meal breaks in between. The school does not provide any meals or snacks for the students until after testing has been completed. That means that many students will go for hours without anything in their stomach while being asked to complete a full length SAT exam. It is my goal to provide all my students with the nourishment they need in order to not be hungry so that they can focus on taking the exam.
