Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of my students come from from the Excelsior and Bayview-Hunters Point Districts in San Francisco. Since the 1960s, the Bayview-Hunters Point community has been cited as a significant example of marginalization. It remains "one of the most economically disadvantaged areas of San Francisco."

Root causes include a working-class populace historically segregated to the outskirts of the city, high levels of industrial pollution, the closure of industry, and loss of infrastructure.

The results have been high rates of unemployment, poverty, disease, and crime. In the 1980s, the Excelsior neighborhood became predominantly Latino with the arrival of refugees from Central American wars and immigrants from Mexico.

Our students are so resilient and bright, but sometimes they aren't able to focus in class because they experience tremendous amounts of trauma and stress. I work in the Health and Wellness Center, and I am a Community Health Outreach Worker. I often see students struggle with stress, trauma, illness, and depression due to things happening in their homes and in their communities. I am committed to providing a safe, clean, and comfortable space for all students.

My Project

Many of our students come from low-income families and poverty-stricken neighborhoods. The Wellness Center is a safe haven for many of our students. We provide one-on-one therapy, social skills and support groups, reproductive health care, and tea for our most underserved students. We are open 5 days a week during school hours and after school as well.

Malnutrition plagues our community, and we are constantly trying to promote healthy habits and create change.

Our students struggle in class due to constant hunger and illness. They aren't able to focus on their classwork and often come to me seeking food, water, and comfort. I also see many students eating Hot Cheetos and junk food because they cannot afford nutritious meals and snacks. They will also come to the Wellness Center complaining of stomach aches and headaches from all the chemicals they ingest from their junk food.

I am requesting an assortment of healthy snacks. Being able to provide our most at-risk students with snacks and food will allow them to feel safe, cared for, and ready to focus in class.
