Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Teachers who provide snacks to students contribute far more than just academic support—they play a pivotal role in nurturing the social, emotional, and psychological well-being of their students. While the academic benefits of snacks, such as maintaining energy levels and improving focus, are well known, the deeper effects often go unnoticed but are equally important.

First, offering snacks in the classroom creates an environment of care and support.

Students who receive snacks may feel a sense of belonging and appreciation, which is crucial in building self-esteem and trust. For many children, particularly those from lower-income backgrounds, having a snack available during school hours may be the only consistent meal they receive throughout the day. Teachers who provide snacks are not only helping to bridge nutritional gaps but also demonstrating compassion, making students feel seen and valued beyond their academic performance.

Moreover, snacks can offer a moment of relief during a long school day, reducing stress and helping students manage hunger-related distractions. When students are hungry, their ability to concentrate, process information, and participate in class is compromised. By addressing this basic need, teachers ensure that students are able to engage more fully in their learning. However, this gesture also fosters an emotional connection, allowing students to feel cared for in a way that goes beyond the typical teacher-student relationship.

On a deeper level, teachers who offer snacks are teaching kindness, empathy, and community. Students who experience generosity firsthand are more likely to exhibit those same values towards others. The simple act of sharing snacks can instill a sense of gratitude and encourage students to be more mindful of the needs of their peers, fostering a more positive and supportive classroom atmosphere.
