My Project

As a teacher in a Title I school, I witness the daily struggles my students face—not just academically, but physically and emotionally. One of the biggest challenges is hunger. Many of my students come to school without having eaten a full meal at home, and by the time lunch arrives—being the last for our grade level—they are already drained, distracted, and unmotivated.

The Impact of Hunger on Learning

It’s no secret that a hungry child cannot focus, engage, or perform at their best. I’ve had students tell me they can’t concentrate because their stomachs hurt or that they feel tired and unmotivated. While I have done my best to provide snacks out of my own pocket, I simply can’t continue to do it alone.

Why This Matters

1. Basic Needs First – Before students can learn, they need to feel safe, comfortable, and nourished. A hungry student isn’t worried about math problems; they’re worried about when they’ll eat next.

2. Increased Engagement & Focus – Providing small snacks or brain breaks with nourishment can make a huge difference in students’ ability to stay on task and participate.

3. Equity in Education – Many of my students do not have the same access to food and resources as others. They deserve the same opportunity to succeed without hunger being a barrier.

4. Emotional Well-Being – When students don’t have to worry about hunger, their confidence, mood, and motivation improve, leading to a more positive classroom environment.

While I have personally provided snacks when I can, I can’t do this alone. My goal is to find resources—whether through donations, grants, or community support—to ensure that my students have access to nutritious snacks that help them stay focused and ready to learn.
