This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Please help us fund snacks and drinks so our students are fed and focused during after-school tutoring. The COVID pandemic left devastating effects on student math scores, with students dropping two or more levels below grade level. The setbacks can have major consequences for generations of children unless immediate, thoughtful remediation takes place. The Geometry teachers at my school are concerned that our students who come from low-income households were disproportionally impacted by the pandemic.

Feeling so far behind could lead to disengagement in school, making it less likely that they graduate from high school or attend college.

To remedy this problem, the Geometry team created a tutoring club after school for additional work time outside the classroom. At the Math Hangout students can come to complete homework, finish classwork, makeup exams, try challenging work, and most importantly clarify misconceptions. It has been one month and a huge success so far with the help of our school. However, our principal just told us that they will have to cut our snack and drink budget due to schoolwide budget cuts.

The majority of our students wait to eat once they get home due to the poor quality of school lunches. We want to continue to provide snacks and drinks at our Math Hangout to nourish students' brains and continue to motivate students to attend. Please help us fund snacks and drinks so our students are fed and focused after school.
