Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I counsel 12-14-year-old growing adolescents who mostly come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. My students focus their time learning content they need to graduate to high school and beyond; this may be difficult for some students, however.

I work with each 8th-grade student individually and in groups teaching them advocacy skills, executive functioning skills, positive communication skills and many other social and emotional skills they may need to navigate the world around them.

Many of my students participate in our school's sports team and clubs, showing commitment to their school community and their future.

Over 90% of my students come from the surrounding impoverished neighborhood, yet they consistently earn high test scores, arrive at​ school daily and on-time and demonstrate resiliency while navigating life despite traumatic experiences.

My Project

The snacks that I am requesting for my students will help them focus throughout their long school day without hunger getting in the way of their learning. Research shows that hunger may impact a child’s school performance, as children from families who are not sure where their next meal may come from have lower math scores and repeat a grade, among other challenges.

By providing my students with a small snack, in the event they feel hungry throughout their school day before lunch at 1 pm​, you are helping them grow, develop and focus on learning instead of thinking about the food they need.

Ultimately, they need to be able to concentrate in the classroom so they can succeed in school and be prepared for fruitful futures.
