About My Students

Fariha, Nina, Mohammad, Keke, and Jeriel are 7th grade students who are all very passionate about "Coffeehouse" at our school, which is a weekly discussion period modeled after the English coffeehouses launched in the scientific revolution. Coffeehouse provides a safe space to discuss and debate ideas.

My students would like to create a real coffeehouse feel, inspired by their research of English coffeehouses in the 17th century. To encourage and enhance discussion and debate during their weekly coffeehouse period, my students would like to have healthy snacks and juice. I provided snacks for the first 4 months of coffeehouse, but we have unfortunately run out.

One of the key academic skills addressed and developed in the interdisciplinary "Coffeehouse" period is the justification and construction of explanations grounded in evidence and reasoning. Students follow (and are assessed according to) a coffeehouse discussion and debate rubric that is aligned to the Common Core speaking and listening standards for engaging in collaborative discussions with diverse partners. In addition to developing their skills in engaging in and contributing to collaborative discussion, students develop social-emotional skills such as teamwork, empathy, and collaborative problem-solving.

In Their Own Words

We think it is important to have snacks and drinks in coffeehouse because when we eat and talk together, everyone participates more and pays attention more. Having snacks and juice also makes coffeehouse more fun and opens people up. Coffeehouse is important because it is a time when we can talk about things happening in the world. In coffeehouse, we share how we really feel. We can also use what we have learned in class about making arguments based on evidence and reasoning.

We would be leaders in coffeehouse by helping to set up and distribute snacks and drinks every Friday. We would also get involved with helping more students get excited and involved with coffeehouse.

To be honest, a lot of our classmates don't eat lunch. Coffeehouse is right before lunch. This will help encourage our classmates to eat and stay focused in school. Also, having snacks and juice lifts our mood. With better moods, everyone participates more. With more participation, we will get better discussion and debate, and become closer as a class.
