This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am the Darth Vader of my school. I teach middle school math. Specifically, I teach math remediation classes to small groups of struggling students. Yes, it's true: I am the teacher that makes students who don't like math do extra math. The kids are great about it most of the time. We do fun activities and games and use all sorts of math tools. I try to keep it light while still working on the basic skills they are missing that make math class so challenging and a drag.

After Valentine's Day, I had some extra treats so I brought them to my remedial classes and boy were they a hit.

Students got a small treat for getting logged into their computers right away and checking out the skills we are working on in class. Students who participate in the Group Jam (where we all work through the same problems at the same time) got a small treat to thank them for their efforts. When it came to independent work time, students were rewarded for asking questions, improving on a skill, and helping each other. It was the best day of Math Remediation for the whole year. While the incentives helped motivate students to be more productive, the extra productivity manifested as students learning more and even (gasp!) liking math just a teeny bit. Victory!

Working extra hard at a subject that is simply not your favorite can be draining. It takes a mental toll on all of us. That's when the extra special snacks helped a lot. I don't love giving out candy, but the sweets gave many of the kiddos an extra boost of energy to get them through all of their hard work. With your help, treat day could be every day!
