Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My multilingual students, who are at the beginner stages of language acquisition, will participate in an after-school program where they will practice reading, speaking, writing, and comprehension skills. This program will meet every week after regular hours, and I need your support to provide them with a little snack.

Food is instrumental when building community.

Sharing something sweet or tasty can spark conversations and set up the mood to learn. Food is also a great motivator for many of us when we have a long day of work, or it can simply mean a reward for our efforts during our time working together.

For many of my students, snacks are a privilege. They are provided with breakfast and lunch at our school cafeteria, but as I said, this program will be in the afternoon, and many families can not provide snacks for them to bring.

The intention behind the snacks is both to provide comfort during their hard work and also to feed them so they won't be starving until it is time to get home for dinner. There is a saying in my culture that states something like, "Those hungry are unable to learn." I honestly think it is true that when we are hungry, we can only think about what we would like to devour when it is time for our next meal. Especially for the youngest ones, putting a basic necessity of life second is impossible.
