Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a speech-language pathologist at an elementary school serving students with various learning disabilities. Every day is a new adventure as they learn various strategies to improve their receptive and expressive language skills. I love seeing their faces light up as they begin to understand new concepts, produce sounds correctly in words, read, spell words, or write sentences independently. However, many of my students express feeling hungry throughout the day which results in a lack of focus and mental stamina to learn. At times, they even become very sluggish and often need a quick snack to hold them until lunchtime or until their after school snack meal time.

A small treat such as a chocolate Hershey's Kiss, a cookie, or a cereal bar serves as a "little pick me up" to help them get through the session.

I tend to go through Hershey's kisses quickly, so having that on hand to give my students would be so helpful. Also, just having a variety of snacks (such as fruit snacks, granola bars, and cereal bars) for my students to select will help nourish their bodies and give them the fuel needed to focus on their learning. I am constantly replenishing my "snack stash" which has become an overwhelming expense. I hope that with the donors' support, I will be able to provide a variety of snack options for my little ones!
