Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Having food and snacks will give students some much-needed brain food and allow them to continue on to finish their school day which ends at 4:00 pm for most. The majority of the students at Manhattan Academy for Arts and Language (MAAL) are migrant asylum seekers residing within the New York City shelter system who are generally food insecure and ALWAYS hungry while attending school. Students leave class and are irritable, angry, and unfocused when they need food. Having snacks on hand will prevent students from leaving class due to being hungry and give them a much-needed nutritional pick-me-up.

My goal is to keep students fueled enough for them to be able to focus on their studies instead of their stomachs.

MAAL students are working to learn English as a new language while also studying full-time in order to earn their high school diploma.
