Smoke-free Indoor Exercise for Los Angeles Runners!

Help me give my students a safe way to exercise after the devastating fires in Los Angeles.

My Project

Gray skies are going to clear up so we’ll put on our happy faces! Located 9 miles south of the Eaton fire, my school was lucky to suffer minimal damage from the winds and flames. However, the poor air quality generated by the toxins and microplastics in the air blowing through our historic East LA campus is expected to be a challenge for the foreseeable future.

Finding creative ways to keep active while avoiding the hazardous air quality created by the Eaton fire will take creativity and some new equipment.

In addition to nearly 1,000 globally-minded citizens, my school has one of the largest middle school running teams in Los Angeles. I am asking for 6 treadmills and an air filter to add our fitness center to give our students a safe way to get some cardio while staying inside. After school, my 30 member running team can keep training for the LA Marathon, while during the day, all students can use the equipment during PE classes.

My runners are caring, humorous, and committed. All 30 have already completed their training through a half marathon, and I am confident with their continued dedication and training, they will all complete the LA marathon this year. We are a 100% Title I school. Our ethnic population is approximately 92% Hispanic or Latino, about 17% are English language learners (ELLs), and around 16% receive special education services.
