Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This is a project for around twenty 6th, 7th and 8th-grade Journalism students at a K-8 center in South Florida. The middle schoolers produce daily videos for our Morning Announcements program, and also make posts for our social media, plus blogposts for our website. That requires a lot of photos and videos. We take some ourselves, of course, but to represent the school adequately we are really dependent on teachers sending us material. Now, some teachers are great photographers. Others, not so great. And a majority of teachers do not send us anything.

We really need to find a way to encourage teachers to send us more - and better - snaps and videos.

We think we may have found a way to solve this problem. Here is our idea. My middle schoolers are going to hold a weekly photography competition on the Morning Announcements. They will make skits inviting classes to send in photos on a given theme and use the photocopy paper to reward the winning classes. (There is a dearth of copy paper in the school right now: my kids could not have chosen a better way to motivate the teachers.) How does this help my students? It guarantees them a constant stream of photos and videos throughout the year - materials that they really need to do a competent job in the Morning Announcements, on our social media, etc. The students really need good, representative shots and films of the entire school in order to do their job - and we think this copy paper is going to be the key to getting them!
