My Students

"Who inspires you?" The previous quote is posted on my classroom wall next to a poster of Rosie the Riveter by Norman Rockwell. I have done my best to create a studio environment that is creative and inspiring. Yet, my students lack fundamental reference books. This is where we need your help.

This public high school is situated in an impoverished, industrial, and gang-infested area making the simple trek to-and-from school dangerous for many of the students.

There are no local art stores, museums, galleries, or bookstores. As you can imagine, they yearn for creative outlets that reflect and honor their youthful culture and interests. This is where my classroom fills many voids. Although my classes are extremely large, my students still manage to persevere and produce excellent college-level art pieces.

My Project

As beautiful and inviting as my classroom is, it simply lacks art books. My students normally create autobiographical art pieces inspired by contemporary artists. I do create slide shows to assist in visualizing complex art concepts but, as you can imagine, this is very limiting. I want them to have readily accessible books that are beautiful and inspiring. They come in with a very limited perception of what constitutes art. These books would be readily available when they have brainstorming and sketching sessions. Many of the books ordered are directly related to the contemporary and urban style of art they create. These donations would further enhance their visual vocabulary and serve as models for potential careers in art beyond the classroom. I also ordered books on graphic novels for an anime club that I sponsor within my classroom on Fridays after school. Having so many wonderful resources would further enhance their interests and visual literacy and inspire them to create.

This project is very important because many of my students lack caring individuals in their lives.

They come from backgrounds that would shock many outsiders who dare not walk in their shoes, yet they are very resilient. My needs may seem expensive but they'll go a long way. These books would serve as reminders that people outside of their school care about their interests and their future as artists. Thank you for taking the time to read my project!
