Help Ms. P.

I am a Biology teacher, hired through Teach for America to help expand the educational opportunities of disadvantaged students. Ours is a Title I school, English is the second language for 40% of the students (ESL), and 78% of the students qualify for a free or reduced lunch. I am committed to providing an environment that actively engages my 165 students, who are spread among five diverse classes including an Advanced Placement class and classes in the School of Advanced Studies. It is vital for students to take ownership of the material they are learning, and a tool that would enhance their ability to do this is the SMART Board. A SMART Board would allow my students to fully participate in every lesson, from the structure of DNA to Punnett squares in genetics. Biology can be composed of difficult concepts, but the SMART board will allow my students to genuinely interact with the visuals and diagrams, addressing the visual and kinesthetic learning modalities of the majority of my students. For my students to be competitive in college, they need to be exposed to as many forms of technology as possible. It is undeniable that they love technology, evident in the high school culture in which nothing excites them more than iPods, MySpace, video games, and sound systems. My students need to realize that the technology they embrace outside of the classroom can be enjoyed within a classroom learning environment as well. This will provide additional incentive to attend class consistently, an important factor in student achievement. Teachers who have SMART Boards in their classrooms have remarked about the increase in involvement from students who rarely participate in class. Rather than simply listening to teachers lecture with PowerPoint, students are able to actively participate in the learning process. The SMART Board will play a significant role in fulfilling the all-too-true Chinese proverb that states, "I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand." All 165 of my students deserve the opportunity to have equal access to the technology that will help them gain a thorough understanding of the material that will serve as a foundation for college and for their lives.
