My Project
I am currently teaching 22 amazing students. I only have 2 readers in my class. When they first entered the class many of them felt insecure about their reading abilities. They would always focus on what they didn't know or couldn't do, rather than speak to their strengths. Many of the students said things like " I can't read" or " I can't write." It saddens me when I give them a task and they tell me they can't do it. They are very eager to learn and are very hard working. I'm working on shifting the mindset and using the skills we do have while working to improve the things we struggle with. We have gotten to the place where they are now willing to try, we just lack the tools to get them there seamlessly.
One thing that I have noticed throughout the years of teaching is that small group instruction is the secret sauce to developing strong readers.
It is in small groups that students learn targeted skills to help them become fluent readers. I am asking for tools to make my small group instruction in addition to independent centers more engaging and meaningful. I can use the supplies to teach, and also to have them apply concepts on their own. Please help me build on their current knowledge and give them new skills to make the fluent and confident readers. Help make my small groups more impactful. You can literally change the trajectory of their entire life by giving them the gift of reading.
