Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach in a full day kindergarten program in Rhode Island. The Learning Community is a public charter school that serves 280 creative students K-4. High expectations for student achievement, strong partnerships with families and an emphasis on literacy are hallmarks of our school.

Not all children learn at the same pace or even the same space! Some children learn best in a large group, some in a small group away from the hustle and bustle of a busy kindergarten room. My teaching partner and I work hard to serve all of our 20 students needs to help them excel in reading and writing. Every day, we work with small groups to help them achieve their dreams of success in school and beyond. We also work with small groups to provide extra academic and language support. While we have room available for this important work, we don't have the funds to make the space exciting and inviting for the students and teachers working there. The tile floor and cinder block walls need some warming and cheering up to make it an engaging space for learning.

A colorful, ABC carpet will be a bright addition to the room and provide a space for stories, songs, and games. Five year old children like to sit on the floor while reading or snuggling up in a soft chair to listen to a favorite storybook and soft bean bag chairs are just right for little bodies to get cozy. Six white boards for students to practice emerging letter, number and word writing will complete our space.

Please help us enrich our literacy and language work with these enthusiastic students. I know our children will benefit from your generosity. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
