Can you imagine attending a school and not being able to create anything? My art class is a place where students get to do that. They get to create. However, these students do not have access to the quality art materials that they need in order for their work to be truly meaningful to them.
My students get to come to art once a week for 45 minutes.
It doesn't sound like much time, however it is plenty to create several good quality art projects each year. These students come from a low-income area and deserve the opportunity to express themselves through the use of quality art materials. It makes school exciting for them to be able to express themselves through art. It also gives them something to look forward to each week.
My Project
I teach second through fifth grade art. I have planned a unit based on the artwork of Gustav Klimt. The students will create their own artwork in his unique style. They will have the opportunity to use tagboard paper and a variety of paints (acrylics, watercolor cakes, liquid condensed watercolors). They will add intricate details to their artwork with watercolor pencils and oil pastels. This activity will inspire the students because, for them, this will be the first time they have ever had the opportunity to use different materials to create artwork.
I believe that the students will truly enjoy this unit.
In the past, these students have only had the opportunity to work with tempera paint and plain drawing paper. I want the students to be inspired by the creation of their artwork, and I believe that having the experience of using a variety of quality materials can do that. This project will be a positive learning experience for my students. It will help make school an exciting place for them!
