Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my classroom come from a variety of economic and cultural backgrounds. My students are on the autism spectrum and each face their own challenges, however, they each have their own strengths and abilities! My students are 3 and 4 years old and for many, this is their first school experience! They have to cope with separation anxiety, learn the routine of school and the structure of the day. They require visual supports to get them through their school day.

My students are creative, enthusiastic, and strong!

They love to move, listen to stories, sing songs, and love lots of positive attention! We learn during small and large group time. We also have a great deal of individual one on one learning! I focus on each child's individual potential each day. They are all so different and unique!

My Project

A very big part of our school day is small group time. Unfortunately, the small tables we currently have are falling apart and are breaking. I have to get rid of them for safety reasons. My students learn academic concepts best when they are in small groups. We do small groups in the form of learning centers. A teacher sits at the table with 2-3 students and they work on various tasks. The three tables may be: Math Center, Writing Center, and a Literacy Center. At the small table, one teacher sits with a group of 2-3 students to teach and reinforce concepts that are taught throughout the day and in a large group.

Smaller tables for small group work make it much easier for teachers to interact and assist their students.

My students require a great deal of assistance to focus and retain concepts. They require prompting to remain in their seat. These tables will make it much easier to manage a small group so learning can take place!

Another use for these tables is for one on one teaching. My students require one on one time each day to work on their individual IEP goals. These tables can be used for other activities throughout the day such as different sensory tables!
