This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is located in the heart of Jackson Heights, one of the most diverse neighborhoods in Queens. Its hosts students from grades K - 5. The population is predominantly composed of 91% Hispanic, 7% Asian, 1% Black and 1% White. As a result, we are a Title 1 school. My school has 1 Dual Language class per grade which helps support many of the New Comers because while they are learning English, they are also maintaining their native language.
My class is filled of 32 first graders, who are energetic and eager learn.
My students are bi-literate who are simultaneously learning to read and write in English and Spanish. Everyday they come to school ready to share their experiences and motivated to provide peer support to anyone who may need help. They are mini-teachers!!
My Project
In order to target the needs of each of my students, I try to work in small groups everyday with different students based on their needs across different subjects.
However, because we were capped out this year at 32 per class, we ran out of chairs for my small group table so we have been meeting on the floor by the library.
These moveable stools will help with their fidgetiness while they are in a small group.
Also because there are 32 little ones, the noise level is pretty high when they get up from their seats to come to the meeting area or go to lunch. The chair socks will help eliminate the noise during transitioning time.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
