Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Growing up in Brooklyn, my school's arts curriculum team have made it mandatory for every students to be exposed to visual art, dance, band, and chorus. Somewhat of a stigma is still attached to chorus but I am getting more and more young men to sing every year! Let's continue!

My students are overwhelmingly Latino and African-American, live in government-subsidized housing, and eat a free lunch because of the Title I money that my school receives.

I have wonderful children who have warm hearts and are eager to show their talent when given the opportunity to do so. Too often, in the inner city, urban setting, children do not get a real chance to shine brightly.

My Project

In order to increase retention in the chorus during the crucial middle school years, I have already made strides to arrange half of the repertoire so that it 1. fits their voices better and 2. familiar melodies and tunes (yes, even pop music) make the kids more apt to enjoy the time. I've already purchased a music software program in order to complete this project! This time around I can't afford these supplies and my students, in a high-poverty school, could really use a chance to have fun in the music classroom. There are many aspiring musicians that have the ability to study hard and excel in high school and even audition for all-city programs and onto colleges!

I want this project funded because my younger kids would benefit from teamwork during the first few months of naming pitches and learning rhythms and these boards would create a game-like atmosphere that is fun.

Many of my 11th graders this year came to me as 6th graders just a short six years ago. I would be so happy to see these 6th graders I have today be in my 11th grade chorus six years from today.
