KHS is situated close to the Ala Wai Canal, a drainage canal leading into the Pacific Ocean. Locals know about the high levels of bacteria like E. Coli and Vibrio Vulnificus, a flesh-eating bacteria. This hampers the public's ability to use the canal for water sports like swimming and fishing.
The WORMS club's purpose is two-fold: 1) promoting local farming by producing vermicompost in accessible quantities; and 2) partnering with Genki Ala Wai, a nonprofit organization that promotes the use of "Genki balls" that use effective microbes to destroy harmful bacteria.
We want to further Genki Ala Wai's mission to make the Ala Wai Canal fishable and swimmable while raising awareness about the benefits of effective microorganisms and vermicomposting.
Furthermore, the W.O.R.M.S. Club has already donated 300 genki balls to Maui. After the Lahaina fires, the coast has been subjected to harmful bacteria. With the boxes, ornaments, test tubes, gloves, test strips, pipettes, and other resources, we plan to create DIY (do-it-yourself) kits to send to Maui families and schools to further support coastal waters. Ultimately, all of our waterways are connected and we want to make them clean.
