I have twenty-four hard working students. Every morning they come to school excited to see their friends and learn new things. The students face poverty, split families, and hunger each day. On top of all of this, they strive to do their best and grow each day in the classroom. School is a place of refuge, and I strive to work together with students to create an environment where the stress and distractions of home fade away.
A pivotal element to my students' success is developing a classroom community of readers, writers, and learners.
As a class, we must come together as a team each day, putting behind us the elements that are out of our control and picking up the day's tasks. We must learn to deal with conflict, emotion, and challenge. Together, we learn from one another and are inspired to never give up!
Throughout the school year, my students have been working diligently to increase their abilities as readers and writers. The majority of my classroom came in below grade level, and we have been working intensively each day to develop habits of good readers. One habit of a good reader is to read increasing challenging texts.
My students are now needing texts far past the level provided in my classroom.
Coming from teaching second grade in previous years, I had few fourth and fifth-grade level books and seeing the grade level that my students arrived on, I didn't think I would need more above third grade.
However, as the year has progressed, I have been constantly blown away by my students' growth and excitement for reading. They are looking for more texts, and I know that bringing in new books so close to the end of the year will continue to push their growth. Not only will it provide the needed text level for some accelerated students, but it will also help inspire and motivate some struggling readers that are still pushing and growing.
These books will benefit my current students and many classrooms to come by creating a more well rounded, leveled library.
