Skyping Without Static!

My students need conference camera and a a new keyboard/mouse to have Skype conversations! We are currently part of a global collaboration project and have been unable to Skype due to an old camera.

My Students

Back in the day, classrooms had four walls. Today, with the technology available, classrooms are "Flat"! That's the name of a global collaboration project that my 2nd graders are involved in -- Flat Classrooms (see it on the Internet). We need a working Skype camera to continue in this project!

My 2nd graders are very excited about the technology being used in my classroom.

Last year, I had the same students as first graders (because I had a mixed grade 1 and grade 2 classroom). They participated in a project calling "Through Young Eyes," and because of this project, I was selected as one of 100 teachers that participated in Microsoft's Partners in Learning 2012 US Forum. This year, we are reaching out and connecting with classrooms around the world. The Flat Classrooms project we're involved in has connected us with classrooms in China, Australia, and around the USA. In addition, we have begun collaborating with two other classrooms -- one in Colorado and one in Texas -- with the end goal of giving them first-hand insights to the Iditarod this winter. Last year's champ, Dallas Seavey, lives in our town, as does newcomer Travis Beals. We'll have classroom visits and Skype with buddies - but we need a working camera!!!

My Project

Our current camera belongs to a colleague. It's outdated and unreliable. I spent two hours online with our school's IT Dept. trying to make Skype more reliable on my PC. The technician installed new drivers and software. Still, the Skype connection is full of static and unreliable. It's not the bandwidth either. A new state-of-the-art webcam (one that's built for small group conferencing) is absolutely ideal and will allow all our national and global collaboration to continue without a hitch. The wireless mouse and keyboard being requested will also enhance our communication abilities because students will be able to take turns typing in chat boxes from their team tables. I hope you can help us make our global collaboration efforts a reality. Recently, one of my students exclaimed how much he loved my classroom because of Skyping, student Wikis, and the fun use of extending learning through technology! Yay! This is my goal: to have a positive impact on student learning with technology.

This project is very important to my students.

I also believe it is very important to their futures. At the Microsoft Forum I participated in, I learned that the best classrooms today are the ones that are styled after the business workplace. That means we should have decent equipment to collaborate beyond the classroom walls. Thanks for considering helping us achieve this!
