My Students

"Young children are not good sitters. The are hungry for stimulation. Children learn best when they are encouraged to explore, interact, create, and play," (Thompkins, 1991).

The students in my pre-k classes are three, four and five year olds that have been screened and found "at risk" for development in either cognitive, language or motor areas.

Developing cognitive skills is one of the key components to school success! Prekindergarten classrooms must provide opportunities for children to engage in exploration and offer students many ways to experience the world around them.

My Project

Many students in my classroom don't have the opportunity to go outside, play, and discover nature. Not having the ability to observe animals and their habitats prevents my students in learning about the wonders of nature. I will use the forest animal puppets to retell stories from books we read and develop language arts skills at the same time. The students will be able to make a connection to the animals in our forests with this hands-on opportunity. In addition, the boys and girls will be able to build habitats to resemble a forest in the block area with the trees, bushes, and rocks. These hands-on learning opportunities will stimulate my students to learn about our planet and how to care for the environment that they live in!

These hands-on learning materials will foster an appreciation for nature and the environment.

My hope is that my students will not only learn to care for our planet personally, but they will share their appreciation with others!
