My Students

My students have limited access to natural history museums. The nearest natural history museum that I know of is over 100 miles away. I want to introduce my students to the Earth's past so that they can have a better understanding of the importance of guarding the Earth's future.

We live in a rural community which has been hit hard by the current economic downturn.

Minority students compose 40% of the student body and around 62% of our students qualify for free or reduced-priced lunches. In spite of our poverty, many of our students have dreams of breaking the cycle and pursuing careers that bring financial and social success. But there are many of my kids without hope. They are biding their time to get out of high school and go to work in their parents' minimum wage jobs. I want to inspire them to think bigger. The funds provided through organizations such as DonorsChoose, surprise many of my students. It shocks them that there are people outside our community who care about them and their futures. My part in all of this is to create a modern, well stocked science lab that captures their interest and inspires them to learn. The models that I would like to acquire are excellent teaching tools because they allow for hands on examination.

My Project

My students need dinosaur skull models - Allosaurus, Brachiosaurus, Triceratops, and Tyrannosaurus - to make the Earth's past real for them. Up until now, my student have seen dinosaurs on television. They have never had the opportunity to actually handle fossil replicas. These replicas will reach my students in ways that text books and even computer enhanced videos cannot do. Their oddity will excite my students and that excitement will lead to research and discovery. I think of myself as a tour guide through the halls of science. The only way that I can truly encourage my students to learn is to present the information in such a way that it becomes something that they care about. This task is much easier when you can take something as abstract as a creature that lived millions of years ago and turn it into a concrete model that they can physically observe and hold in their hands.

I have many students who don't believe in evolution.

Your support will help me present them with concrete evidence that change has occurred on Earth. This is not intended as an attack on their faith, but rather to encourage their curiosity. Hopefully, this curiosity will lead to inquiry-based research, and the birth of a scientist.
