My Students

My school, the SSC HS located in downtown Brooklyn; though the area is beautiful, many of my students travel over two hours to get here from underserved and underrepresented communities, and we are a Title 1 school. We were fortunate enough to receive donations from the city, but our job is not done yet! We recently unveiled our newly renovated Research and Media Center named for our founding principal Mr. Michael A. Johnson.

"Education is the most powerful weapon with which you can change the world."- Nelson Mandela

We would like to continue to build on our library! Our goal is to fill it with books of all genres to help get our students reading again!

My Project

Research suggests that a critical reason why many students do not attend college is not that they are not qualified. They lack the knowledge and skills to navigate the complex process of applying to college, making wise career choices, and applying for financial aid. Would you please help me give my students, many of whom are first in their families, to apply to college the skills to navigate this stressful process with ease?

With these new books, my students will have a “windows and mirrors” experience.

The students will be able to read the latest books, reflect (mirror) and reveal (window) on the perspective learned about the college/career and financial aid process in our monthly “Skilled Up” workshops.

Let’s prepare our next generation of leaders by allowing them to read and expand their options to make wise college/career choices.
