Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In Sketches of Spain, Miles Davis demonstrated his independent and unique sound. In art class in Spanish Harlem my Middle School students are struggling to assert their independence, express their feelings, and demonstrate their creativity. They need sketchbooks to take pride in and to use daily.

We are a Title I school with a 100% free lunch program.

My students come from an environment of economic hardship. Recently a strong art program has taken root in our school. However our limited art supplies are dwindling fast. Most students don't grow up with crayons or markers at home. In fact for most children their only experience drawing or coloring is in the art room. As they mature I want them to have the same experience as students elsewhere. They should have sketchbooks which they take pride in.

My Project

Just like having an instrument to practice on daily, having a sketchbook helps young artists to hone their skills, develop mastery, and to experiment with new forms. With their own sketchbooks in hand my Middle School students can work on long term art projects while documenting their steps. They can take their sketchbooks on trips to museums, and they can sketch from great works of art in and outside of the classroom. Students will be able to take their sketchbooks home during recess to work on homework assignments connected to art. Essentially, the sketchbook will help to make art part of their everyday lives. Help us live more artfully!!

If my students receive the sketchbooks requested then art will become a real part of their everyday lives.

They will be able to better observe the world around them, to imagine how the world can look and be a better place. Sketching their dreams and goals will have a long lasting impact on the way they see and feel about their world and themselves.
