This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The use of sketchbooks in the art room allows my students a space to practice their skills, write out their ideas, and create habits that will improve their growth as an artist. In the 6th grade, students at our school elect to take either art, music, or band for all of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade.

Because my students have chosen to be in this art class, the middle school students using these sketchbooks are ones that are truly invested in art - and I believe that having a space for them to collect their sketches and thoughts will allow them to take their artmaking practice outside of the classroom, as well.

These sketchbooks would be provided for six classes of 6th, 7th and 8th grade students, including students from a mix of ENL, ICT, AP, and Gen Ed classes.

In the 6th grade, my students are introduced to the elements of art, such as line, shape, and form. In the 7th grade, my students will build upon this knowledge to hone their skills and create pieces that potentially could be included in their portfolios should they choose to apply to arts high schools. In the 8th grade, students will use their developed skills to make works of art about themselves, their community, and design concepts. I can't wait to see what incredible works of art will come out of these students as a result of their thoughtful planning, sketching, and writing in these sketchbooks!
