Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When children take the time to not just look, but really see something, their minds grow, and ideas bloom. Teaching children to observe, and draw what they see, helps them not only develop focus, but it helps them discover how to see, and understand the world around them.

My 6th grade students are hungry to learn.

They are curious about everything, and when I look at them I see the potential for a great future for us all. Right now, our art department cannot afford to provide the students with sketchbooks, so most kids are using cheap notebooks of lined paper. They don't complain, and their enthusiasm remains high. My students need sketchbooks. These kids really deserve to know what it feels like to work on sketching quality paper. They deserve to see their hard work uninterrupted by blurry printed lines. Our school is a Title 1 school, which means that over 85% of students' family incomes qualifies them for free school lunches. We have a large English Language Learning population, and our classes are inclusive, with children of all special abilities, and needs. Art class is a nurturing environment where all children can find a way to express themselves, as the act of making art helps them develop motor coordination, concentration, observation, and understanding.

My Project

My 6th grade students will be using these sketch books to practice their drawing. They are learning now about observational drawing. Our Visual Arts Curriculum is aligned with the New National Common Core Standards for learning, and continually integrates content area subjects like English Language Arts, Math, Science, and History. Students acquire, and use vocabulary in class discussions, and when writing their artist statements. Understanding of ratios, proportions, patterns, geometric shapes, measurement, and transformations are just some of the mathematical concepts enhanced by art. Student's observational skills are continually challenged supporting their Scientific reasoning. The History of the World is given a context through the study of Art History, as students learn about different artists, and how their art reflects the times in which they lived. Students also learn about contemporary artists, and new media.

Being a teenager is one of the most difficult, and confusing times in everyone life.

My 6th graders are just starting to make that change from young child to teen. With the vital skills they gain from art, they will grow to see, and understand what they see, in the changing world around them. They will know that donors like you care about their future. A small gift like these sketch books will give them the inspiration to create a bright future.
