My Students

If you enter my classroom, you will see a diverse group of students building practical math skills to use in the classroom and out. You will hear many accents, as a third of my students are English language learners. You might even smell the leftovers from the free lunch and breakfast all of my students receive. What you won't hear is that most of my students face poverty at home. You won't see that many of them have overcome unimaginable obstacles. You will see the joy of learning; you will hear the effort and work we put in every day, despite what we go through.

My Project

Due to COVID precautions, my students do not have recess anymore. This presents a major problem for the wiggle worms. Students at this age are not meant to be sitting for 7 hours straight, and yoga breaks are simply not enough for some students. While I do my best to build in brain breaks and movement, it does not replace the free movement of recess.

By exploring alternative seating options, I am hoping to reduce distractions, increase focus, and manage disruptive behaviors.

Studies have shown that students, particularly neurodivergent students, really benefit both academically and behaviorally with alternative seating like balls, cushions, wobble stools, or just a different chair sometimes.
