My eager fourth graders are from Worcester, Massachusetts. They all come to school with smiles on their faces but have very different learning styles and needs. Many students in my classroom face challenges on a daily basis. These students range from special education students to students learning English for the first time. And many of these children come from high poverty neighborhoods. School is their safe place. My class loves to work with one another and they love to meet in places all around the room, not necessarily sit in their seats all day. They love to participate in activities that engage their bodies and their minds. They love to learn with technology and as their teacher, I love to think outside of the box.
Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent and partner work times they choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk. Allowing students to use bean bags, wobble stools, and other flexible seating choices will give them more independence and allow for a more successful work environment!
