My Students

My school is a melting pot of cultures. We have students from Korea, China, Africa, Mexico, Russia, the Philippines, and Japan; just to name a few. This causes many challenges for me as their teacher. Students everywhere need lots of hands-on activities to get them engaged, excited, and help them learn, even if they don't know the language. My class is no exception. My students are 7 and 8 years old and enjoy learning by doing.

Each year, it is more challenging to get students eager to learn about reading, math, and science.

Many students come to school with a poor or negative experience in these subjects. It's time to change that and get them involved in meaningful activities that help them change and leave my class with a "positive attitude".

Students want to learn and by giving them the tools to use in the classroom they will be more confident and achieve greater things. These tools will help bridge the gap between learning and language. Thus, inspiring them to work hard and learn by doing. They are our future and we need to invest in them now, while they are accepting and eager to explore. The "future" is now.

My Project

A classroom reading and research center will empower students to read new texts and conduct research in a comfortable cool area. Our classroom is very hot, so the fan and reclining seats will make the space very inviting. By using flexible seating and new and exciting Hot Dot informational reading texts, students will be eager to jump into reading everyday. The Hot Dot passages will allow the students to do self-assessments to improve their reading comprehension. These new texts will inspire them and make them eager to research new topics, so they can learn more. Small groups of 4-6 will use the laptops to further their curiosity on real-world topics. They will then prepare material to share with the class by using the computers to make slide shows and blend space presentations.

Computers and hands-on tools will get students involved and engaged in their own learning, which equates to successful reading skills.

Reading will now be fun and exciting! Everyday, the students will want to move to the reading center to try out the new tools and get "absorbed in reading".

The students will see reading and research as fun and beg to use the computers for research on topics of their choice. Small groups will inspire their classmates and teach others what they have learned. Each day they will grow as readers and this will carry over to continued success in their futures.
