Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are either first or second generation immigrants who reside in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx, New York, predominantly from Latin America. Our school is a Title I school which indicates that the students and families in the community are low income and struggle academically.

This year, our principal created a new program called Science Through Cooking.

Our 6th graders will have the opportunity to learn about chemistry, energy, engineering, states of matter and force & motion, all through cooking skills.

Our students are excited to come to school everyday. They were a part of the after school cooking program last year and really enjoyed it. They come in eager to learn each day and resistant to leave in the afternoon, most staying until 6:00pm in the various after school activities.

Cooking incorporates all three branches of science- physical science, biology and earth science. This project will give students an rare freedom in the classroom to directly apply classroom knowledge to their everyday lives.

My Project

We would not be able to have our Science Through Cooking program without a functional and sanitary sink! This program means so much to our students and we're looking forward to learning science by cooking. Currently, our sink is outdated and hardly functioning, which limits our opportunities.

Our students are so excited to get this program going!

The sooner we are able to get the sink in our classroom, the quicker we will have hands-on learning!

This innovative approach to teaching science in the classroom is unlike anything schools in our area have to offer. We are transforming an outdated science lab to a modern 21st century kitchen laboratory.

This program will teach the students life long lessons that they will be able to apply to their lives for years to come.
