My Students

Worksheets are OVERRATED! I want and have my students daily engaged on hands on lessons. Next year I want a huge focus on combining my science, math, reading, and writing all into one lesson. The first day of school I want them engaged in science experiments. I want them to love to learn.

My school is a Title 1 school which means most if not all of my students are free or reduced lunch.

I currently have 24 students sitting in my classroom. 18 of those students do not have English as their first language. I have one student with spinal bifida and water on the brain and another student who has cystic fibrosis who periodically goes to the hospital for a couple weeks at a time. Let alone the challenge of pushing those at grade level to begin with to advance farther. The students come and go frequently at my school. Because I have a huge percent of my students that do not speak English as their first language it is difficult for the parents to reinforce what is being taught at school at home. However, with all of the struggles of being low income and doing without, the language barrier, and physical differences my kids still love coming to school and learning. They are asking what new things they will be doing while walking in the door. They are energetic!

My Project

I want to foster this love of learning and create and even bigger desire to want to continue their learning at home. I want them to go home and say mom...dad...let me show you what I learned today. Not just tell them. I want my students to become true scientist ALL year long. This will begin with daily science experiments and journaling. One of the first science units will be sinking and floating. What kid does not love to play in water. What if you could play in water and learn at the same time. DOUBLE BONUS!!! I am asking for a whole class sink or float exploration kit. This will be used to teaching estimating and begin the unit. This will be monitored and evidently placed in the discovery center. I believe this will be a great hook for this unit. I am also asking for two different sinking and floating kits. The beginning of the year will be a lot of teaching and reinforcing. Using both sets my tables will have to learn to corroborate while learning and exploring.

I want my students to love to learn and be excited to learn.

I want to see their precious faces light up when the answer comes to them. I want them to get involved while learning. I want to hear the squeals and laughter as they are sharing their though processes with one another. There is no better way to do this than to be totally hands on and learning through doing. I need your help and support to make this happen. This will not only support one class but my future classes as well.
