My Project
For the last 6 years, I have taught Civics at a K-8 school with students from low socioeconomic families. There is a lot of love and support but many of our families have limited means. I spend my own money on incentives and supplies for our students, many of which are struggling readers. In Florida, students are required to take a standardized Civics exam at the end of the year. It is worth 30% of their overall grade. This is difficult for many students because the Civics Exam requires students to read excerpts from actual historical documents. I have achieved 75% pass rate the last 4 years but would like to reach 85% this year. I would like your help to energize my lessons using technology that will help my students digest some of the difficult but important excerpts from the Constitution.
With your help, I will be able to utilize Nearpod, which allows me to create online lessons with online activities and Flocabulary which provides musical resources for our lessons.
I have had trial versions of both, and the students loved it. We have been singing about the Branches of government with Flocabulary as our class starter. We then jump into a live Nearpod lesson on the branches of government adapted from my PowerPoint. This online lesson has fill in the blank, drag and drop, and draw you answer components. It allows me to include excerpts and review questions for additional practices.
The response from my students has been amazing and the results on the last test was very promising. It is important to reach this new generation using tools that are familiar, technology. I am confident these resources will allow my students to experience success on the Civics Exam. Please help me give my students Nearpod and Flocabulary.
