My Students

Welcome to my school! We have students from all walks of life, ethnicities, and economic circumstances. This is a place where our kids feel safe, supported, and free to be themselves.

I am a music teacher who serves over 400 students in grades K-12.

I see elementary students once per week for 50 minutes. In that short amount of time, I do my best to help them become strong, independent musicians.

My primary goals are to give them a set of skills they can use to make music for the rest of their lives, and to instill a desire for lifelong music making in all situations! I hope you will support my efforts to provide quality music education to all my students and their families.

My Project

Each year, my fifth grade music students create or arrange original music to perform for their classmates and families. They accompany themselves on ukuleles, xylophones, drums, and other classroom instruments.

I want to extend this project so that fifth graders learn a beloved ballad (story song) to perform for younger students at our school.

To do this, I am building a classroom library of children's picture books based on familiar folk songs and story songs. Small groups of fifth graders would learn one song, including the history of the story, and would arrange an accompaniment with classroom instruments. They would then go from classroom to classroom and perform their songs for each class, using the book as part of the performance.

In the future, I will also use these books to incorporate folk music as a more prominent part of my music classroom. They will be read over and over to hundreds of children who will experience the delight of each story and song within each book.
