Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a wonderful & diverse school with high potential for academic achievement. We are a Title I school. Many of our students come from low income families where they don't have the opportunity to play an instrument at home. As the music teacher I see every one of our 809 students throughout the school year. We now know from the many research studies that the best education includes a well developed music education. I am passionate about using music to increase student learning potential.

My students music experience outside of my classroom is limited to popular radio music.

It is my goal to remove that limit to include World music, Classical music, Folk music, and historically significant steps in popular music styles. In my school my teachers and I work together to achieve higher level skills through cross-curriculum music activities and songs.

My Project

I wish you could see the excitement in my students' eyes when they listen to World Music & start to learn about World Drums. For these underprivileged children, who come from backgrounds where opportunities are few, the opportunity to express themselves on the drums together is priceless. Research shows the benefits of music, which include: enhancing academic achievement and increasing social/emotional health. My students LOVE to play instruments.

The drums I have chosen are authentic tubano drums.

I have been trained in the World Music Drumming Curriculum Level 1 & 2. It is designed to help students get along with each other and work as a team. Here are some of the benefits of World Music Drumming that serve as an antidote for bullying:

• The first key word in the curriculum is Respect — for others in the group, for the culture being studied, for the instruments used.

• Cultural differences are celebrated as a rich palate of life choices. “Other” is seen as good.

Moreover, your donation will provide us with sufficient number of drums so that half of the students in my 3rd-5th classes will be able to share a drum. The drumming fosters teamwork and creativity. It also enhances concentration and motor skills. It involves both mind and body, mental and physical. Lastly, these tubano drums will provide exposure and connect the children to a rich cultural and historical heritage.

Please consider helping our students to play World Drumming Music and make diverse music. If we are able to get the drums soon, we will perform the new drums with holiday songs at our winter program and throughout the rest of the year. We can't wait to beat on our new drums. Thanks for your help.
