This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When I was in school, my favorite part of the day was music. I was lucky enough to be in a school with an amazing music program, where we performed full Operas every year. Unfortunately, this is not an opportunity allowed to many students. I want to bring that back, by teaching my students opera!

My students all come from a low socioeconomic background.

That, tied with all the latest budget cuts, has drastically reduced their exposure to the arts. While we have an amazing art teacher in my school, we do not have a music or performance program. With your help, I would like to have my students perform The Mikado by Guilbert and Sullivan.

My Project

I have already done an opera with a previous class, The Pirates of Penzance. My students loved learning the songs and putting on the performance. With the art teachers help we had an amazing set that helped bring the show to life for my students and the entire school who watched. Unfortunately, all I had to work with for music was the regular audio system and my students voices were drowned out by the CD. I am asking for a karaoke system that will eliminate the vocals from the track, so we can still hear the music, but the only voices we will hear are my students. I want my students to take pride in knowing how strong their voices are when performing such a difficult show.

Performing operas when I was in school was such a memorable opportunity.

I fell in love with music then, and it's something that stayed with me for the rest of my life. I want to bring my students that same joy. I want them to be able to look back and say that they were able to do something very few people could ever dream of. Thank you in advance for giving them that chance!
