My Students

The weather is something that effects all of our lives, especially here in Arkansas. Sometimes it is amazing, and sometimes scary.

I teach Science to one hundred 7th grade students at a small, rural, public school in Arkansas.

Many of our students are farming students and their livelihood depends on having the right type of weather at the right time. At the very least, they may wish to know if it's the right day to plan a picnic or go hiking.

My Project

They are well acquainted with flooding and tornadoes and it is important to know the causes of these events. During the next school year, we will be studying lots of weather phenomena and will learn how to forecast weather based on data that we gather with tools we currently have. It's vital that they have good comprehension of the effects of air pressure on our weather. In order to accomplish this, I plan on using the vacuum kits to help them see the effects of a lack of air pressure on various things which can be placed inside the apparatus. We will use the globes to study the seasons, climate regions, the Coriolis effect, and other topics throughout the year.

Studying the weather can be made so much more interesting when we have proper tools.

Many of my students will never have the opportunity to use tools such as these in their home lives. After gaining an understanding of the types of information meteorologists know, they are sure to love watching the weather on TV, and maybe some of them will even choose a weather related career!
