My Students

My students come into my room and ask, "What cool things in science are we going to do today?" They like when my class is interesting and planned in a way where they can go home and expand their knowledge in the subject and come back to class and share what they learned from their family or online.

Our school is located in a rural part of northeast Arkansas in a school with virtually no science funding.

Our two hundred plus sixth grade students are intelligent, hard-working young people who love to discover new things both at school and on their own. Using and learning about new technology and different ways to use current technology in the classroom is one of their favorite ways to learn. They get very excited every time new science equipment is brought into the classroom. They are excited to work in groups and/or with a partner to discover new things. They work well in groups. This equipment will be a great way to help them work in small lab groups and learn from each other. Our students learn much better from a lab-based environment than a text only lecture classroom. They get excited about topics when they see the topic in action firsthand. They also like to experiment and try new things with items, like magnets, that are now commonplace tools.

My Project

Many of my students know that magnets stick to metal, but they may not know that magnets don't stick to all metal or that magnets can levitate themselves or other things. The Levitron Ultimate and the floating magnets will give them an opportunity to levitate magnets themselves and see how the magnets do it. The neodymium magnets can help them understand how magnets can have different strengths that don't depend on size for strength, aid them in levitating metals, and creating their own compass. The Dowling magnet kit will give them the tools to do a diverse range of labs, like adding magnets to increase a magnetic field, demonstrate the strength of a magnet by the number of items it picks up, and it will also help them see magnetic fields when they sprinkle iron filings on them. All of these resources will help strengthen their understanding of magnetism's basic terms (magnetic field , repel, attract, &magnetic poles) because they will get to see and experience them firsthand.

Magnetism is such a fascinating subject that it gets every student, no matter how shy, on the science greatness bandwagon.

These resources will also inspire my students to do great science fair projects with magnets. They may even go out into the community to share their discoveries with friends and family, which makes all the labs worthwhile. My students may also be inspired to look into careers that involve magnetism.
