I have just begun teaching 2nd grade in East Oakland. I am teaching at a new small school on the site of a school that has been failing for many years. My students are amazing and surprise me every day. I am a first year teacher and am just beginning to understand what it means to teach. I want to make sure my kids are learning the material I want them to learn. I want an instant way to get into their head to make sure they are really grasping the material. The best way I have seen this done is through the use of individual white boards. In math or even in reading or phonics, students can write answers, letting me know instantly who understands and who needs more help. I can read my students' minds with as little as a set of 20 white boards and a few dry erase markers. I want a way to make my teaching better and ensure every one of my students understands the material. This simple tool will influence my students throughout the year and in every year to come.
