My Students

Budget cuts made our school able to provide only four whiteboard markers and 12 crayon boxes for the class. We ran out of all paper in November. I currently buy my own crayons, markers, and paper, but there is so much of the year remaining. Even with careful use, I can't do this all year.

This is an urban 1st grade in the Pacific Northwest.

Our school is Title 1, which means 80% of students receive free or reduced lunch. There is a significant percentage of students who speak languages other than English at home and I work hard to celebrate this. There is no majority language; 30% speak Somali, and 22% speak "other." There are significant populations who speak Tagalog, Vietnamese, Spanish, Mandarin, and East African languages.

My Project

This will allow me to teach our curricula. Period. We do not currently have paper to let students do math activities at home, publish their personal narratives, record their reading progress, write thank you cards to visitors to our school, and many more activities. I want to be able to continue sending weekly newsletters home to update families on the class' weekly progress. The markers, construction paper, and scissors will help students interact on a deeper level with their academic subjects.

These are basic supplies.

Without them, learning and teaching are much harder. These are difficult economic times for everyone: the students' families, the school, the district, visitors to this site. It is extreme when I have to buy such simple supplies for the group.
