My Students

My freshmen physical science students inherited a classroom that has been unused for six years. We do not have a classroom set of any functional labware, so it's time to improve this.

My students are energetic and curious.

As freshmen, they are bright and interested, and their minds are just beginning to explore complicated ideas. It's a privilege to be their teacher. Over 70% of my students receive free or reduced lunch, and approximately 50% are first-generation immigrants or live in homes where another language is spoken equally with English. School is an opportunity for them to expand their world, and my science class, in particular, is a chance for them to explore new ideas.

My Project

In an earlier grant, you generous donors provided us with a set of magnets. Most days, I put the magnets out before class and on our break. Students cluster around the magnets, inventing silly games together or mulling over the attraction/repulsion forces. They think they are playing. I know they are learning. In this new grant, I'm asking for basic measuring devices, so we have a working set of thermometers, stop watches, and cylinders. It will save huge amounts of time for me to have these at hand, and it will help the students focus on their experiments to have working tools. I've also asked for some more "play" things, so students can have fun with density, color, and waves, in support of our learning units.

My students have limited physical resources outside of our school, yet they bring happy, whole hearts to class.

It's important for our school to meet these students with the resources to support their learning and exploration of science.
